Every guide to headshot size hands you a spec table: LinkedIn wants this many pixels, print wants that many, twelve rows deep. Accurate, and it quietly creates the problem it claims to solve, because people crop a version for today's platform, lose the original, and then next month's platform needs pixels they threw away.

The master file rule

Keep your headshot as one vertical 4:5 file at 2400x3000 pixels or larger. That's the industry's standard print-ready size (it produces an 8x10 at full quality) and, more usefully, it's the shape every other format can be cut from.

The one-direction principle: a tall 4:5 file crops down to a square, and a square crops down to nothing else. You can never go back up.   1. Upscaling a small file. Stretching 400 pixels to 1200 adds size, not detail; it produces the soft, slightly melted look you've seen on team pages.
