Most guides on how to take a headshot tell you roughly the same eight or nine things. Use natural light. Wear solid colors. Stand against a plain wall. Smile genuinely. Don't take a selfie. The advice isn't wrong, exactly. Almost every headshot guide tells you to use window light. None of them explain what they're really asking for. The underlying physical property is softness, and softness is determined by one thing: the size of the light source relative to the subject.

A small light close to the face produces hard shadows. A large light close to the face produces soft shadows. The sun is enormous but it's 93 million miles away, which makes it functionally a tiny light source from earth's perspective. Direct sunlight produces hard, harsh shadows.

A cloudy day takes that small distant sun and effectively turns the entire sky into the light source. The sky is now a soft box the size of the visible atmosphere, and it produces beautifully soft light because of its enormous apparent size.

Window light works for the same reason. A large window with the sun behind clouds, or facing away from direct sun, becomes a soft light the size of the window. Get close to it and the apparent size relative to your face is huge. The shadows on your face become soft.

A few practical implications:

A bright cloudy day outdoors is the easiest "studio" you can find. No setup, no equipment. Face away from the brightest part of the sky and you have a giant diffused light source above and in front of you. This is genuinely better than most indoor setups.

Window light works best on overcast days or when the window faces away from direct sun. A window with direct afternoon sun pouring through it is essentially a hard light. The diffuser (a thin curtain, a sheet) transforms that hard light into a soft light by making it bigger and lower in intensity.

Indoor overhead lights are almost always wrong. They put light directly above your face, which creates pronounced shadows in the eye sockets and under the nose. The light is also usually small, which makes those shadows hard-edged. Turn off overhead lights when shooting indoors.

Mixed light sources are the most common indoor problem. Window light is blue. Tungsten bulbs are orange. LED bulbs vary. The position of the light matters as much as the type. Light coming from slightly above eye level and slightly to one side is the most universally flattering position. It creates a small shadow under the nose and chin that sharpens the jaw without obscuring the eyes. The thirty seconds before you take the headshot

This is the part of how to take a headshot that nobody writes about and it's where most self-shot headshots fall apart.

The face you produce when you know a camera is about to fire is not your normal face. It's a version of your face that's been arranged to be photographed. Tension creeps in. The jaw sets. The eyes narrow. The shoulders rise. Whatever expression you intend to land on gets held a fraction too long and starts looking performed.

The fix is to do three small things in the moments before the shutter.
